The departure of Rich Hand after seven innings of pitching proved to be exactly what the A's needed to defeat the Rangers, 7-2. Hand allowed only three hits and was leading, 2-1, when he was removed for a pinch-hitter. Jim Panther took the mound in the eighth and the A's fell on him, Steve Lawson and Pete Broberg for six runs, all unearned as far as team pitching records were concerned, to break the game wide open.
