Tom Seaver, who pitched five innings before leaving the game with a sore muscle, gained credit for the victory when the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 3-2. Rick Wise, who was the loser, continued to have bad luck in close games. The defeat was the Cardinal righthander's 11th by a one-run margin this season.

Seaver helped himself with a triple in the third inning and scored on an infield out by Ken Boswell. Ed Kranepool doubled and Cleon Jones singled for another run in the fourth before John Milner accounted for the deciding marker with a homer in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
