Steve Carlton's bid for his 24th victory was rebuffed by the Mets, who defeated the Phillies' star southpaw, 4-2. The Phillies scored both their runs off Jerry Koosman in the first inning on a single by Larry Bowa, walk to Don Money, double by Greg Luzinski and sacrifice fly by Roger Freed. The Mets tied the score in the fourth with walks to Bud Harrelson and John Milner, a single by Cleon Jones, infield out by Duffy Dyer and double by Jim Beauchamp. Dyer broke the tie with a homer in the sixth and the Mets added an extra run in the eighth when Jones singled and Dyer tripled. [The Sporting News] |
