The Red Sox, who were held hitless for the first four innings, scored four runs in the fifth inning with the aid of two safe bunts and defeated the Yankees, 7-2. Rico Petrocelli walked as the first batter to reach base against Rob Gardner. A single by Carlton Fisk and infield hit by Andy Kosco loaded the bases. Ben Oglivie forced Kosco, Petrocelli scoring.

Doug Griffin followed with a perfect bunt down the third base line for a hit to drive in Fisk. Lynn McGlothen also bunted safely to fill the sacks again. After Lindy McDaniel replaced Gardner, Tommy Harper was safe on an error by Bernie Allen, Oglivie scoring. Griffin then counted the fourth run when Luis Aparicio grounded into a forceout.
