Roberto Clemente, who had a perfect day at bat with three hits and a walk, smashed a two-run homer off Fergie Jenkins in the seventh inning to carry the Pirates to a 6-4 victory over the Cubs. The Pirates jumped off to a 3-0 lead, starting with a run in the third on a triple by Clemente and single by Willie Stargell. A walk to Clemente, double by Stargell, sacrifice fly by Richie Hebner and error by Don Kessinger added two runs in the sixth.

Nelson Briles singled in the seventh and, with two out, Clemente hit the tie-breaking homer. The Cubs narrowed the gap with a run in the eighth on a single by Kessinger and double by Billy Williams, but the Pirates regained their two-run lead with singles by Gene Alley and Rennie Stennett around a sacrifice in the ninth.
