George Mitterwald hit his first homer of the season and drove in another run with a triple to help the Twins defeat the Royals, 4-3. Cesar Tovar, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored the first two Twins' runs before Mitterwald homered in the fourth inning.

Danny Thompson walked in the eighth and Mitterwald tripled to produce what proved to be the winning run. The Royals had a homer by John Mayberry and run-scoring single by Steve Hovley for their only hits off Dick Woodson until the ninth when Lou Piniella tripled. After Dave LaRoche relieved, Piniella scored on an infield out by Paul Schaal. [The Sporting News]
