The Red Sox were left with a lead of only one percentage point over the Tigers in the East Division race after losing to the Indians, 9-2. Gaylord Perry, who held the Red Sox to seven scattered hits, gained his 21st victory. The Red Sox scored an unearned run in the first inning and picked up their other tally on a homer by pinch-hitter Andy Kosco in the seventh. The Indians' attack included a homer by Buddy Bell and two doubles apiece by Graig Nettles and Frank Duffy. [The Sporting News]
