Old pro Brooks Robinson collected three hits and sparked the Orioles to a 5-2 victory over the Red Sox, who slipped out of first place in the East Division race, dropping one-half game behind the idle Tigers. The Orioles moved within one length of the lead, while the idle Yankees were 2½ off the pace.

The Red Sox nicked Pat Dobson for a run in the second inning before Robinson led off with a double in the fourth and scored on a triple by Davey Johnson. Terry Crowley walked in the sixth and took third on a single by Robinson. Johnny Oates doubled, driving in Crowley, and Dobson singled to score Robinson. The Orioles added their last pair in the seventh. Paul Blair doubled and Boog Powell beat out an infield hit. Don Baylor drove in one run with a pinch-single and Robinson made it 5-1 with a single for his third hit of the game.

The Red Sox threatened in their half of the seventh when Carlton Fisk and Dwight Evans singled and Doug Griffin was safe on an error by Bobby Grich, Fisk scoring. After Doyle Alexander replaced Dobson, Cecil Cooper came up as a pinch-hitter for the Red Sox and lashed a line drive, but Grich made a leaping catch and threw to second to double Evans.
