. . . where the 1970s live forever!

For the second time this season, Jon Matlack pitched the Mets to a 1-0 victory over the Pirates in a duel with Nelson Briles. In their previous encounter, Matlack beat Briles in 10 innings July 27. This time, the lone run scored in the ninth. Rusty Staub, playing in his first game with the Mets since hand surgery July 31, singled and took second on a sacrifice by Cleon Jones. After an intentional pass to Ed Kranepool, Duffy Dyer singled to drive in the winning run. [The Sporting News]
