Johnny Bench smashed a homer and drove in another run with a safe squeeze bunt to account for the scoring in the Reds' 2-0 victory over the Giants. Jim McGlothlin and Clay Carroll combined to pitch the shutout. Carroll relieved after Ken Henderson led off with a double in the ninth inning.

Bench hit his homer in the fourth. Pete Rose beat out a bunt in the sixth and was forced by Joe Morgan, who stole second and continued to third on a wild throw by Dave Rader. Bench then crossed up the Giants' defense with his safe bunt. [The Sporting News]
