In their first match-up since their trade, Steve Carlton beat Rick Wise and gained his 25th victory as the Phillies defeated the Cardinals, 2-1. The Phillies opened with a run in the first inning on a double by Denny Doyle, sacrifice by Larry Bowa and single by Tommy Hutton.

The Cards came back with a run in their half. Lou Brock doubled, stole third and scored on a single by Ted Sizemore. The tie was broken in the sixth when Hutton doubled, reached third on an infield hit by Greg Luzinski and crossed the plate on an infield out by Bill Robinson. [The Sporting News]
