Two unearned runs enabled the Phillies to defeat the Cardinals, 3-1, on a chilly night before a crowd of only 4,719, the smallest turnout at Busch Memorial Stadium since the park was opened in May, 1966. Bob Boone hit his first major league homer for the Phillies in the seventh. The Cards tied the count in their half on a double by Jose Cruz, an infield out and wild pitch.

In the eighth, Larry Bowa singled for the Phillies and stole second. After a walk to Tommy Hutton, Willie Montanez smashed a grounder that bounced off the glove of Ted Simmons, playing first base. As the ball caromed into the right field corner, both Bowa and Hutton scored. [The Sporting News]
