. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Clutch relief performances by Bob Veale and Bobby Bolin enabled the Red Sox to emerge with a 3-2 victory to move one full game ahead of the Tigers in the East Division race. The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead before the Tigers began to threaten. In the first inning, Tommy Harper doubled, Luis Aparicio beat out a bunt and Carl Yastrzemski hit a sacrifice fly. Carlton Fisk singled in the second, took third on a single by Doug Griffin and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lynn McGlothen. Yastrzemski delivered what proved to be the game-winning homer in the third.

The Tigers charged back with a two-run homer by Duke Sims in the sixth and then loaded the bases on singles by Mickey Stanley and Aurelio Rodriguez and a pass to Ed Brinkman. Veale, relieving with one out, struck out pinch-hitter Frank Howard and retired Tony Taylor on a line drive to Rico Petrocelli. In the eighth, Sims singled and Stanley walked, bringing Bolin to the mound. Rodriguez beat outan infield hit to load the bases. Brinkman grounded to Petrocelli, who stepped on third to force Stanley and threw home in time to nail Sims for a double play. Pinch-hitter Jim Northrup then flied out. [The Sporting News]
