. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Red Sox, who built up a 4-0 lead on a pair of homers in the first two innings, failed to hold their advantage and lost to the Brewers, 6-4, with the result that their lead in the East Division race was cut to one-half game over the idle Tigers. The Orioles, defeated by the Indians, and the off-day Yankees were 2½ behind. Carl Yastrzemski homered after a pass to Luis Aparicio in the first and Marty Pattin connected for the circuit after a single by Doug Griffin in the second to produce the early Red Sox margin.

The Brewers began their comeback with a round-tripper by Johnny Briggs in the fifth and added a run in the sixth on a double by Ron Theobald, a wild pitch and single by Ellie Rodriguez. Brock Davis opened the eighth with a safe bunt, stole second, continued to third on a wild throw by Carlton Fisk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez. Joe Lahoud was safe on an error and George Scott, a former member of the Red Sox, smashed a homer to put the Brewers ahead. Rick Auerbach iced the victory with a boundary belt in the ninth.
