Jerry Koosman, who pitched hitless ball for 6 1/3 innings, gained his first victory since September 11 and only his second since August 6 when the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 3-1. Joe Torre broke Koosman's no-hit bid with a single. Jorge Roque tripled in the eighth but was stranded. Ted Simmons homered for the Cardinals' run with two out in the ninth. When Skip Jutze followed with a single, Tug McGraw relieved and struck out Roque for his 25th save.
