Getting in tune for the playoffs, Bruce Kison pitched five innings and Luke Walker worked the last four frames as the Pirates defeated the Phillies, 3-1. Manny Sanguillen doubled and Rennie Stennett singled for the East Division champs' initial run in the second. Bill Robinson homered in the Phillies' half.

The Pirates broke the tie in the fifth with a single by Stennett, forceout by Gene Alley and double by Dave Cash. Roberto Clemente, who scored the final run in the ninth, rapped a pair of hits in the game to raise his career total to 2,998. [The Sporting News]
