A two-run homer by Carl Yastrzemski with two out in the 10th inning gave the Red Sox a 4-2 victory and eliminated the defending champion Orioles from the East Division race. Luis Tiant pitched a five-hitter to raise his record to 15-5.

Luis Aparicio homered off Jim Palmer in the first inning to produce the first run for the Red Sox, but Boog Powell drove in a run with a double in the Orioles' half of the first and homered in the sixth for a 2-1 lead. The Red Sox tied the score in the seventh when Carlton Fisk and Dwight Evans singled and Doug Griffin doubled. Tommy Harper doubled in the 10th before Yastrzemski smashed his homer. Left fielder Don Buford raced back to the wall at the 380-foot mark and leaped for the drive, but the ball bounced off his glove and went over the fence. [The Sporting News]
