Led by Jim Northrup, who had a double and three singles in a perfect night at bat and drove in five runs, the Tigers walloped the Brewers, 12-5, to remain 1½ games behind the Red Sox in the East Division race. Northrup batted in one run with a single in the first inning, plated three with a double in the third and singled home another run in the fifth before ending his big game with a single in the eighth for the Tigers' 16th hit.
