Already eliminated themselves, the Orioles put the squeeze on the division hopes of the Red Sox by gaining a 2-1 victory to cut the Hub club's lead to only one-half game over the Tigers. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead against Lynn McGlothen in the third inning. Davey Johnson walked and took second on a grounder by Mike Cuellar, but held up on an infield hit by Merv Rettenmund. Johnny Oates forced Rettenmund, moving Johnson to third, and Boog Powell drove in the run with a single.

The Red Sox tied the score in the sixth on a single by Reggie Smith, pass to Rico Petrocelli and single by Carlton Fisk. Bobby Grich then provided the winning run with a homer in the Orioles' half of the sixth. Cuellar ran into trouble with one out in the ninth when Dwight Evans and Doug Griffin singled, but pinch-hitter Bob Montgomery bounced into a double play to end the game. [The Sporting News]
