Ken Holtzman, who won only nine games for the Cubs last year before being traded, gained his 19th victory of the season when the Athletics defeated the Royals, 4-2. The Royals counted a run in the first inning on a walk to Amos Otis, a stolen base and single by Lou Piniella.

The A's pulled even in the seventh when Joe Rudi doubled and Tom Murphy threw wildly on a safe bunt by Matty Alou. Gene Tenace singled in the eighth, Tim Cullen sacrificed and Gonzalo Marquez, batting for Holtzman, singled to break the tie. Tenace added a two-run single in the ninth for the winning margin before Bob Locker, in relief of Holtzman, yielded the Royals' last tally. [The Sporting News]
