The Phillies hit six homers, the most by any major league club in one game this season, to support Steve Carlton, who defeated the Cubs, 11-1, for his 27th victory to tie the record set by Sandy Koufax for most triumphs in one year by a lefthander in modern N. L. history. Koufax won 27 games for the Dodgers in 1966. Carlton also led the league in strikeouts (310), complete games (30), innings pitched (346) and earned-run average (1.98). The Phillies' barrage included back-to-back homers by Don Money and Greg Luzinski in both the third and fifth innings. Bill Robinson and Terry Harmon accounted for the other round-trippers.
