Cleon Jones hit two homers off Steve Carlton to account for all of the Mets' runs in a 3-0 victory over the Phillies before an opening crowd of 27,326 at Shea Stadium. Jones hit his first homer in the fourth inning and scored behind Felix Millan, who had doubled. The other round-tripper followed in seventh. Jones also had a single to give him three of the Mets' five hits off Carlton.

Tom Seaver, who was the winner, also yielded only five hits, but needed the help of Tug McGraw to save his victory. McGraw, taking over with two on and two out in the eighth, retired Deron Johnson on a foul and then set the Phillies down in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
