In an action-packed ninth inning, the Reds broke a tie with four runs and then stood off a three-run rally by the Braves to gain an 8-7 victory. Marty Perez hit a homer with two men on base for the Braves and Johnny Bench connected with one aboard for the Reds to help forge a 4-4 tie. In the ninth, Phil Gagliano started the Reds' outburst with a single and when Pete Rose bunted, both runners were safe on a late throw to second. Bobby Tolan singled to drive in pinch-runner Gene Locklear. After Bench walked to load the bases, two runs scored on a single by Tony Perez. Cesar Geronimo followed with a sacrifice fly to plate what proved to be the winning run.

In the Braves' half, three singles and two errors produced three runs with one out. Pedro Borbon, replacing Clay Carroll with a two-ball count on Perez, completed the walk charged to Carroll before ending the Braves' rally by striking out Oscar Brown and getting Ralph Garr on a grounder.
