Don Baylor and designated hitter Tommy Davis, who combined hits for a run in the seventh inning, came through again in the 12th when the Orioles scored twice to defeat the Tigers, 3-1. Baylor opened the 12th with a double and counted the tie-breaking run on a two-bagger by Davis. Merv Rettenmund followed with a single for an extra tally.

Norm Cash had homered in the second for the Tigers, who disappointed their home opening crowd of 46,389. The game had been delayed one day by snow and cold weather and was played in 39-degree temperature. [The Sporting News]
