A balk by Jerry Johnson with the bases loaded in the seventh inning gave the Tigers their winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Indians. Aurelio Rodriguez was safe on an error by Leo Cardenas to open the seventh and both Bill Freehan and Gates Brown walked to load the bases.

Johnson, who was obtained in a deal with the Giants, then made his debut on the mound for the Indians and got Al Kaline to force Rodriguez at the plate before committing the fatal balk while getting ready to pitch to Willie Horton. [The Sporting News]
