Making his first start for the Tigers, Jim Perry pitched a seven-hitter and defeated the Indians, 8-2. The Tigers broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning. Mickey Stanley led off with a single and scored on sacrifice bunts by Ed Brinkman and Dick McAuliffe. Bill Freehan singled, Rich Reese walked and Norm Cash was safe on an error to load the bases and Gates Brown, the Tigers' designated hitter, cleared the sacks with a double.
