Two rookies, Gorman Thomas and Pedro Garcia, helped the Brewers win the first game of a doubleheader, 3-2, in 11 innings, but the Orioles came from behind to gain a split with a 5-4 victory in the second game. Thomas hit his first major league homer in the ninth inning to tie the score at 2-2 in the lidlifter. Then in the 11th Joe Lahoud walked, stole second, stopped at third on a single by Bob Heise and scored the winning run on another single by Garcia.

Jerry Bell, who was the winner in relief, came out of the bullpen again in the nightcap and was tagged with the defeat when the Orioles rallied for two runs in the ninth inning. With one out, Brooks Robinson, Paul Blair and Terry Crowley singled to tie the score at 4-4. Mark Belanger, who drove in three runs in the game, then singled off reliever Frank Linzy to drive in pinch-runner Al Bumbry with the winning run. [The Sporting News]
