The Tigers batted their way to an 8-0 lead and then stood off the Red Sox, 9-7, before a crowd of 29,006 in Boston's annual Patriot's Day morning game. The Tigers put together five singles and a hit batsman for four runs in the first inning and added four more in the fourth, three scoring on a homer by Willie Horton. Tony Taylor also homered for the Tigers' last run in the eighth. The Red Sox had a power show of their own with two circuit clouts by Reggie Smith and one each by Rico Petrocelli and Carlton Fisk.
