Homers by Thurman Munson and Felipe Alou, each with a man on base, marked a five-run explosion in the ninth inning as the Yankees came from behind to defeat the Orioles, 7-4. Jim Ray Hart, who made his debut with the Yankees as a designated hitter, led off the inning with his third single of the game and Munson homered to tie the score at 4-4.

After Ron Swoboda walked, Grant Jackson replaced Mike Cuellar on the mound for the Orioles. Swoboda took second on a sacrifice, moved to third after Horace Clarke flied out and scored the tie-breaking tally on a single by Roy White. Alou then smashed his homer to wrap up the victory.
