The Yankees, who scored five runs in the ninth inning to win the previous night's game, 7-4, exploded for six runs in the second inning to beat the Orioles again, 6-1. Jim Ray Hart singled to open the stanza and was out trying for third on a single by Thurman Munson, who advanced to second on the play.

Gene Michael singled to score Munson. Horace Clarke, Roy White and Ron Blomberg followed with singles for two more runs to kayo Jim Palmer. Orlando Pena relieved and on his first pitch, Bobby Murcer hit a three-run homer. Earl Williams averted a shutout for the Orioles by connecting for the circuit in the fourth inning.
