Coming out ahead in a relief duel, Bob Reynolds received credit for his first major league victory when the Orioles scored in the 10th inning to defeat the Tigers, 8-5. Reynolds pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed four hits. Doyle Alexander, who started for the Orioles, gave up a three-run homer by Gates Brown in the third and was kayoed in the fourth when the Tigers tied the score at 5-5.

Lerrin LaGrow replaced Mickey Lolich on the mound for the Tigers with two out in the third and yielded only two hits until winding up the loser in the 10th. Don Baylor was hit by a pitch to start that stanza, Larry Brown sacrificed and Paul Blair was passed intentionally. John Hiller replaced LaGrow and retired Rich Coggins, but Mark Belanger doubled to drive in the winning run for his third RBI of the game. [The Sporting News]
