The Cubs pounded out 15 hits, including nine in the first inning, and held a 10-8 lead over the Pirates when darkness forced the suspension of the game after six innings. The Cubs' initial outburst was good for six runs and started with a homer by Rick Monday. Glenn Beckert, Billy Williams and Joe Pepitone followed with singles. Ron Santo and Jose Cardenal doubled and Don Kessinger and Randy Hundley singled to make it eight hits in a row before Fergie Jenkins struck out. Monday, up for the second time, singled and Beckert then ended the inning by grounding into a double play.

After the Cubs' outburst, rain delayed the game for one hour, 27 minutes. As a result, darkness caught up with the contest and it was completed on the Pirates' next visit to Chicago on July 26. [The Sporting News]
