A homer by Mike Schmidt with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Phillies to complete the sweep of a doubleheader with 4-2 and 2-1 victories over the Cardinals. Steve Carlton handed the Cardinals their two runs in the first game on a wild pickoff throw with the bases loaded in the third inning, but the Phillies came back to tie the score in the third when Larry Bowa bunted safely, Tommy Hutton was safe on an error and Bill Robinson doubled. Then, in the next inning, the two deciding runs followed on singles by Bob Boone and Denny Doyle, a sacrifice by Carlton and single by Bowa. The Phillies took a 1-0 lead against Bob Gibson in the first inning of the second game when Bowa tripled and Hutton singled. The Cardinals tied it against Dick Ruthven in the eighth with two walks and a single by Tim McCarver. Billy Wilson relieved and was the winner on Schmidt's homer in the ninth. [The Sporting News] |
