The Tigers scored three runs in the ninth inning and then stood off a rally by the Rangers to emerge with a 3-2 victory. The Rangers were held to one hit by Woodie Fryman until the eighth when they scored on a single by Elliott Maddox and double by Ken Suarez. The Tigers, scoreless on three hits through the eighth, opened the ninth with a single by Dick McAuliffe. Norm Cash walked and Jim Northrup singled to drive in the tying run. Aurelio Rodriguez then tripled to score two runs and beat Pete Broberg. In the Rangers' half, Rico Carty walked with one out. Lerrin LaGrow relieved and Alex Johnson doubled, pinch-runner Tom Grieve stopping at third. Jeff Burroughs hit a sacrifice fly. John Hiller took over and retired Dick Billings for the final out.
