Steve Carlton held the Reds to only four hits and pitched the Phillies to a 3-1 victory. The Phillies got to Ross Grimsley for two runs in the first inning on singles by Larry Bowa, Mike Anderson and Willie Montanez together with errors by Bobby Tolan and Denis Menke. Bill Robinson doubled and Mike Schmidt singled for the other counter in the fourth. Carlton was deprived of a shutout when the Reds scored in the sixth on a single by Dave Concepcion, a wild pitch and pair of infield outs. [The Sporting News]
