Dick Ruthven, Billy Wilson and Mac Scarce combined on a two-hitter as the Phillies defeated the Reds, 1-0, on a run-scoring single by Willie Montanez with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. Ruthven gave up only one hit, a single by Pete Rose in the third, before going out for pinch-hitter Cesar Tovar in the eighth and received credit for his first major league victory.

Wilson allowed a single by Larry Stahl in the eighth and Scarce retired the side in order in the ninth. Terry Harmon began the Phillies' run-scoring stanza with a single. Tovar, after failing to sacrifice, beat out an infield hit. Larry Bowa bunted and forced Harmon at third. Don Gullett, who fielded the ball, twisted his ankle and left the game in favor of Pedro Borbon. The Reds' reliever walked Del Unser and then was tagged for a single by Montanez.
