Rick Wise, the only winning pitcher on the Cardinals' staff so far this season, gained his third victory in four decisions by defeating the Giants, 8-3. The Cardinals, who had lost 15 games, knocked out Juan Marichal in the sixth inning while exploding for six runs.

Joe Torre, Ted Simmons and Ken Reitz started the outburst with singles for the first run. After walking Ed Crosby, Marichal gave way to Randy Moffitt. Tim McCarver hit a sacrifice fly for the second run. An error by Ed Goodson on a grounder by Wise reloaded the bases and Lou Brock then cleared them with a triple.
