Breaking a 3-3 tie, the Padres scored six runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Cardinals, 10-5. Dave Hilton walked to open the stanza and when Ivan Murrell bunted, both runners were safe on a late throw to second. Derrel Thomas singled for a run to snap the tie. Leron Lee walked to load the bases and Nate Colbert drove in two runs with a ground-rule double.
