The Royals built up a 4-0 lead with the aid of a two-run double by Ed Kirkpatrick and then stood off the Yankees, 4-3. Singles by Cookie Rojas, Paul Schaal and Carl Taylor produced the initial run for the Royals in the fifth inning.

Amos Otis and John Mayberry led off the sixth with singles, forcing the exit of Doc Medich. Kirkpatrick followed with his double off Lindy McDaniel. Kirkpatrick then moved to third on an infield out by Rojas and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae. [The Sporting News]
