Shut out until the ninth inning, the Cubs rallied for four runs to defeat the Dodgers, 4-1, The Dodgers picked up their run with the aid of an an error in the first and Andy Messersmith protected that margin until the ninth when consecutive singles by Joe Pepitone, Ron Santo and Jose Cardenal loaded the bases.

Jim Brewer relieved and walked Jim Hickman to force in the tying run. Don Kessinger then sent the Cubs ahead with a two-run single. Dave LaRoche bunted safely to fill the sacks again and Paul Popovich hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the last run. [The Sporting News]
