Two unearned runs enabled the Cardinals to defeat the Padres, 3-1. In the fifth inning, Reggie Cleveland walked, Lou Brock singled and, after a sacrifice by Luis Melendez, Joe Torre was passed intentionally. Derrel Thomas then booted a grounder by Ted Simmons, one run scoring, and another followed on a sacrifice fly by Tim McCarver.
