Bill Lee, who was elevated from the Red Sox bullpen May 1, made his second start since 1971 and received credit for a 5-1 victory over the Twins. Lee did not figure in the decision in his first start against the Rangers.

The lefthander gave up nine hits to the Twins before yielding to Bob Veale with two out in the eighth inning. Veale retired Larry Hisle on a grounder with the bases loaded. Reggie Smith led the Red Sox at bat, knocking in two runs with a double in the first inning and hitting a single and scoring on a double by Carlton Fisk in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
