Although calling on four pitchers, the Brewers were unable to stop a rally by the Royals, who exploded for six runs in the seventh inning to gain a 9-7 victory. Cookie Rojas began the outburst against Jim Colborn with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amos Otis. Singles by Gail Hopkins, Ed Kirkpatrick and Lou Piniella loaded the bases and kayoed Colborn.

Hal McRae greeted Frank Linzy with a single to score Hopkins and when Johnny Briggs bobbled the ball in left field, Kirkpatrick also crossed the plate. Paul Schaal walked to load the bases again. John Mayberry, who was held out of the starting lineup because of a wrist injury, came off the bench as a pinch-hitter against Ray Newman and singled to drive in Piniella and McRae, sending the Royals ahead.
