While Mike Caldwell pitched a two-hitter, the Padres broke loose with their best batting attack of the season so far to defeat the Pirates, 8-0. Caldwell, who yielded singles by Rennie Stennett and Milt May in the third inning, became the first pitcher to shut out the Pirates this year. The Padres, on the other hand, swung away for 16 hits, including homers by Johnny Grubb and Cito Gaston. Grubb's blow was his first in the major leagues. [The Sporting News]
