Retiring the last four batters in succession, two on strikeouts, Jim Brewer saved the Dodgers' 3-2 victory over the Giants. Al Downing and Juan Marichal were locked in a scoreless duel until the sixth inning when Joe Ferguson and Willie Crawford walked and both scored with two out on an error by Dave Kingman.

Manny Mota tripled in the eighth and counted what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Ferguson. The Giants rallied in their half when Tito Fuentes walked and scored on a double by Chris Speier. Pete Richert came in and was greeted with a triple by Willie McCovey.
