In a meeting between two of the A. L.'s leading pitchers, Ken Holtzman triumphed over Wilbur Wood as the Athletics defeated the White Sox, 5-1. Reggie Jackson's bat supplied the difference. The A's outfielder homered with two men on base in the first inning and added an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Ray Fosse homered for the A's other run, while Dick Allen connected for the circuit to account for the White Sox tally. Wood, whose record slipped to 8-3, was stopped on his seven-game winning streak. Holtzman brought his record to 7-2. [The Sporting News]
