Starting their scoring with a homer by Chris Speier, the Giants defeated the Padres, 4-2. After Speier's swat in the sixth inning, Ed Goodson singled, Garry Maddox doubled and Gary Matthews singled for two more runs off Vicente Romo, who was a loser in his first N. L. start. The Giants added their last run on singles by Goodson, Maddox and Matthews in the eighth before the Padres picked up their pair. [The Sporting News]
