Mike Caldwell yielded only five hits while the Padres collected 11 off Juan Marichal and defeated the Giants, 4-1. The Giants' run in the second inning was unearned on a triple by Gary Matthews with two out and a wild throw by Derrel Thomas on the relay from the outfield. Jerry Morales singled for the Padres in the third, stole second and raced home when catcher Mike Sadek's throw went into center field.

Johnny Grubb doubled and scored the tie-breaking run on a single by Morales in the fifth. Morales took third on a single by Nate Colbert and counted on an infield out by Cito Gaston. Grubb homered to end the scoring in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
