Although needing help in the eighth inning, Wilbur Wood gained his ninth victory of the season when the White Sox defeated the Twins, 5-4. The White Sox scored in the second on a single by Bill Melton and double by Rick Reichardt, added two runs on a homer by Dick Allen in the third and made it 5-0 with a pair in the fourth on a single by Ken Henderson, triple by Reichardt and a wild pitch.

Steve Braun homered in the Twins' half of the fourth. A single by Rod Carew, double by Tony Oliva and triple by Braun finished Wood in the eighth, but Cy Acosta relieved and struck out Danny Thompson to end the rally. [The Sporting News]
