Rallying for three runs in the ninth inning, the Dodgers defeated the Reds, 3-1. A surprise bunt by Johnny Bench resulted in a Reds' run in the eighth after Pete Rose walked and took third on a single by Larry Stahl.

The Dodgers began their rally with singles by Joe Ferguson and Willie Crawford. Following a sacrifice by Ron Cey, Bill Russell was passed intentionally. Steve Garvey grounded to Joe Morgan, whose only play was to first as pinch-runner Steve Yeager scored to tie the game.
